The mallorcan sun and the occasional sahara red rain showers can quickly turn your shiny yacht into a sad looking, floating sand castle.
Here are some tips and tricks to keep your yacht looking great all year around:
Regular wash downs
Treating your yacht with a regular wash down at least one time a month (ideally weekly) will remove dust & dirt and prevents the sun from burning the bird drops into your precious paint job or gelcoat. We recommend using a biodegradable boat soap that is gentle on the marine environment. For yachts that have been treated with ceramic coatings, a ph-neutral soap is recommended. We love the products of www.bestialproducts.com, they work great and are free of all the nasty chemicals. As the mallorcain water is very hard we also recommend to dry all surfaces with a chamoi that was dipped in a water-vinegar mix to break down the calcium water stains.
2. Use your covers
Nothing protects your brightwork, windows and upholstery better that the physical protection of covers. It might take a few extra minutes to cover your yacht up before heading to the restaurant or the pub but in the long run will safe you from pricy renewals or having sun-bleached cushions. Especially varnished wood should be always covered when not in use to protect the varnish from the UV-rays. Remember marine covers can be pricey and should be cleaned with every wash down as well. Avoid using bleach as it reduce the lifetime of the covers stitching.
3. Look after your teak deck
Replacing a teak deck that came to the end of it´s life time is no joy for any yacht owners bank account. Therefore regular care taking is a must to get as much out of the costly timber as possible. A regular fresh water rinse is a good start. A restoration with a chemical two-part cleaner will have your deck looking as beautiful golden blond as you have most likely seen it on the big Superyachts. But remember every scrub will remove the weathered layer off your deck. So if you like the look of a golden teak deck your best bet is to clean it once with a two-part cleaner and then seal the deck with a sealant or oil. We like the product of SEMCO (clear tone). Now instead of watching your decks turn grey within a few weeks, it will maintain the color and your job is to maintain the sacrificial coat of sealant every 4-6 month.
Should you be in a rush, don't find the time to look after your yacht or simply can't be bothered to spend your pressiouse free time with maintaining your yacht you can always rely on the yacht cleaning team of Reinschiff Yacht Management that is operating in the south-west of Mallorca.
